Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to contest specific rulings made by the official, echoing the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
