Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, two plumes of thick smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, though it did not initially provide further details.
Context: Escalating Tensions and Prior Developments
The incident occurs against a background of sharply increased tensions in the region. Major events leading up to this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further discussions planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected assertions about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
These developments is fast-moving, with further updates anticipated as the situation develops.
